Magical Gems in Contexts: International Conference Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts, 16-18 February 2012

Magical gems are amulets carved into precious stones, made mostly in the period of the Roman Empire (2nd-4th centuries AD). They have three special characteristics that distinguish them from other gems and talismans: they contain magical words and spells written in Greek; they sometimes have magical signs (charaktéres) on them; finally, they present unique iconographical schemes, with non-Olympic  Gods conceived by religious thinkers and magi of Egyptian, Jewish and Near-Eastern tradition. Their makers could freely choose from the elements of these cultures. These talismans were used chiefly to avert diseases and demons or to obtain love and success. Today there are about 4000 pieces preserved in private and public collections worldwide.  Their importance is invaluable in  order to understand ancient religious beliefs, medicine and magic.   Periodically they have been the focus of interest in European culture (as in the 17th century and the beginning of the 20th century), and as today’s raising scholarly interest attests, they are back in the limelight.

The conference will focus on the following topics:

  • magical jewellery in Graeco-Roman literature
  • magical gems in their archaeological contexts
  • the chronology of magical gems
  • production of magical gems; characteristic styles and techniques
  • rituals attested by or on magical gems
  • talismans for astrological use
  • magikoi theoi: reconstructing gods and divine figures present or invoked on the gems
  • the connections of magical gems with magic, gnosis and religions of the Roman Empire
  • charaktéres on magical gems
  • magical gems in Judaism and Christianity
  • amulets in the Early Middle Ages
  • collecting magical gems

  • Speakers include:  Gideon Bohak (Tel-Aviv University), Véronique Dasen (University of Fribourg), Chris Faraone (University of Chicago), David Jordan (The American School of Classics Studies at Athens), Richard Gordon (University of Erfurt), Attilio Mastrocinque (University of Verona), Simone Michel (University of Giessen),  Árpád M. Nagy (Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest), Joachim Quack (University of Heidelberg), Jeffry Spier (University of Arizona) and Erika Zwierlein-Diehl (University of Bonn).

The conference is planned for three days, and is intended to form part of an ongoing magical gems exhibition (organized by the Museum of Fine Arts) and research project. We are looking for abstracts (300-500 words) by 15 June, 2011. The final programme will be announced in early September, 2011. There is no conference fee. For speaking participants, the Museum can secure hotel accommodation at a reduced rate.

    Présentation du Projet

    Ephesia Grammata
